The overall objective of FRAMES was to define the specification of
the multiple access scheme for the air interface of the new 3rd generation
of digital mobile radio telephony system, UMTS, which will replace current
2nd generation systems, GSM and DCS, taking the backward compatibility
to these 2nd generation systems into consideration.
The
most significant contribution of the UMTS system consists in establishing
new services in the digital mobile telephony to provide high data rate
transmission, 2 Mbit/s, settling the european technological leadership in
this area previously achieved with GSM.
Integrasys, which was the only spanish company in the consortium,
participated with an effort of 9 man/years within the development and implementation
area for the UMTS demostrator which follows the system definition from
different partners in the project: Ericsson, Nokia, and Siemens.
The total budget
for the project was 12 million ecus and its duration, four years.
